It's 9/11, But With a Monster and Better Special Effects!

Courtesy of J.J. Abrams (producing) and Drew Goddard (writing, which is, admittedly, a good sign), I give you the trailer for 1-18-08 (I'm not so clear whether this is the title--IMDb still lists the film as 'Untitled J.J. Abrams Project').

I honestly thought it'd take longer to get to this point.

That looks astoundingly bad.

Actually, I think the entire "working through 9/11 with sci-fi movie" was done before in Spielberg's "War of the Worlds". Still, I must say that this trailer looks good ("looks nice" doesn't seem to fit in here very well).
And I also think Abrams deserves to win back a lot of the respect he lost during seasons 2 and 3 of Lost. The season 3 finale, in my opinion, was great.
My response had more to do with the look of the trailer (and presumably the film as well) - the same kind of amateur footage through which most of us experienced 9/11 in the hours and days after it happened.

And yes, I do agree that the trailer looks good. Off the top of my head, I can't think of another film that combines video footage with this level of special effects, and the result is seamless.

I also think Abrams deserves to win back a lot of the respect he lost during seasons 2 and 3 of Lost. The season 3 finale, in my opinion, was great.

Perhaps (I've given up on Lost so I can't speak to the quality of its third season), but for the sake of Mission: Impossible 3, I think Abrams deserves to stay in the penalty box a little bit longer.

Abrams didn't earn any brownie points with me for the season 3 finale. After it aired, I promised myself not to waste my time with LOST anymore.

I agree that the trailer looks good in the sense that it is a technically accomplished piece of pop culture. But, praising it seems too much like praising a well executed karate chop aimed below the belt. Milking 9/11 imagery is just so cheap.

Abrams is making the bed he's lying in (and getting paid well to do it), but he's certainly not somebody that I think deserves much respect for the artistic merits of his work.

Just my two cents though...
